  7. WinZip Self-Extractor is a utility program that creates native
  8. Windows self-extracting ZIP files.  These self-extracting ZIP
  9. files are ideal for electronic file distribution because they:
  10. (1) can contain multiple compressed files, ensuring that important
  11. files do not become separated from the rest of the package;
  12. (2) allow the receiver to use a familiar Windows interface to
  13. decompress files, without owning or knowing how to use a separate
  14. unzip utility; and (3) optionally run a "setup" or "installation"
  15. program, which may be included by the developer when the files are
  16. decompressed.

  27. The ZIP file format is an industry standard for compressing and
  28. grouping files.  One ZIP file can contain multiple files.  Files
  29. contained in a ZIP are usually compressed.

  31. Typical uses for ZIP files include:

  33. - Most files available in "file areas" on bulletin boards and
  34.   electronic services like CompuServe and the Internet are
  35.   distributed as ZIP files.  Two benefits of using ZIP files for
  36.   electronic file distribution are that only one file transfer
  37.   operation ("download") is required to obtain all related files,
  38.   and file transfer time is minimized because the files in a ZIP
  39.   are compressed.

  42.   associate.  Rather than distributing individual files it is
  43.   often easier to distribute the files as a ZIP file to benefit
  44.   from the file grouping and compression.

  47. PKZIP(R) utility from PKWARE(R).

  51. A self-extracting ZIP file is an executable program file (.EXE
  52. file) that includes a ZIP file and software to extract or "unzip"
  53. the contents of the ZIP file.  Users can run (execute) a
  54. self-extracting ZIP file just as they run any other program.

  56. When a self-extracting ZIP file created by WinZip Self-Extractor
  57. is run, a dialog box is displayed.  This dialog box makes it easy
  58. for the user to change the "unzip to" directory and change other
  59. options before extracting or "unzipping" the files in the
  60. self-extracting ZIP file.  Self-extracting ZIP files created by
  61. WinZip Self-Extractor are

  83. There are two parts to WinZip Self-Extractor:

  85. 1) The WinZip Self-Extractor program creates self-extracting ZIP
  86.    files.

  88. 2) When WinZip Self-Extractor creates a self-extracting ZIP file
  89.    it includes part of itself in the self-extracting ZIP file.

  91. The part of WinZip Self-Extractor included in the self-extracting
  92. ZIP file is what makes it possible to unzip the files by simply
  93. running the self-extracting ZIP file.

  95. The person who creates the self-extracting ZIP file runs WinZip
  96. Self-Extractor once, specifying the name of the ZIP file and
  97. options, including the default "unzip to" directory and a program
  98. to be run automatically when the unzip operation completes.

  100. extracting ZIP file so it is available when the self-extracting
